A British expat who has lived in Australia for three years has declared it a “better country” overall, but insists the UK still outperforms in three key areas. Luke Tweddle, 25, from Surrey, has resided in Adelaide, Sydney, and now Perth with his girlfriend, and is due to return to England soon.
In his latest travel vlog, Tweddle addressed the question: “Is life in Australia actually better than the UK?” He noted that while Australia wins in many respects, the UK has its own strengths. One area where the UK clearly excels is nightlife. “If you are 18, 19 years old and nightlife is a priority, I actually wouldn't recommend Australia because you're just going to be disappointed,” he said, adding that Australian culture is more geared towards early mornings and outdoor activities.
Another advantage of the UK, according to Tweddle, is the availability of indoor activities regardless of weather. He explained that in Australia, leisure pursuits are heavily reliant on good weather, and the country “literally hibernates” in winter. In contrast, the UK offers many indoor options, including sports and pub culture, that are not weather-dependent.
The third area where the UK wins is social connections. Tweddle highlighted that the biggest challenge of living in Australia is the distance from friends and family. “Unless you really make a close circle here in Australia, I feel like no matter how long you stay here, you will never make as many connections as you have back home,” he said, noting this is a “real negative” for long-term expats.
Despite these points, Tweddle acknowledged that Australia outshines the UK in wages, work-life balance, scenery, public transport, and safety. He concluded: “Australia wins in nearly every way. But it's a weird situation where that's the case, but I also don't want…”
