Harrogate, a North Yorkshire town far from the coast, has been named the best place for a staycation in the UK by the AA. The accolade comes as many Britons choose to holiday at home despite mixed summer weather.
The AA evaluated destinations based on local happiness ratings, parking availability, petrol stations, EV chargers, and the number of activities and accommodation options. Harrogate scored a happiness rating of 7.8 out of 10, indicating a welcoming atmosphere for tourists.
The town offers ample EV charging points and petrol stations for motorists. Its history as a spa destination is reflected in wellness resorts such as the Acorn Wellness Retreat, which offers yoga and treatments including facials and crystal healing, and the DoubleTree by Hilton Harrogate Majestic Hotel & Spa, built in 1889, featuring a spa with six treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, and indoor pool.
For nature enthusiasts, nearby Brimham Rocks provides striking rock formations, while numerous hiking routes allow exploration of the landscape. Garden lovers can visit RHS Garden Harlow Carr (admission £15.85 per adult), which includes tea rooms and a log maze, and Valley Gardens.
