West Lothian Town Named Scotland's 'Unsung' Holiday Destination
Bathgate Crowned Scotland's Unsung Holiday Destination

Bathgate, a historic market town in West Lothian, has been named an "unsung" holiday destination by online travel magazine Islands, highlighting its scenic walks, independent shops, and diverse dining options. The town, situated between Edinburgh and Glasgow, offers easy access to both cities via ScotRail, with trains from Edinburgh taking around 30 minutes and from Glasgow approximately 40 minutes.

Why Bathgate is a Diamond in the Rough

According to Islands, Bathgate is a "diamond in the rough" that provides an authentic Scottish experience, often overlooked in favour of more famous destinations like the Isle of Skye or St. Andrews. The magazine noted: "You generally won't find Bathgate on lists of popular Scottish destinations, but for those looking to experience real Scotland and the rugged, characterful towns that form the country's central belt, Bathgate is an ideal place to base yourself. It's just 14.5 miles from Edinburgh Airport and is surrounded by scenic hikes."

Top Walks and Hiking Trails

Among the many walking trails, Cairnpapple Hill was singled out for its panoramic views and historical significance, with ceremonial and burial use dating back to 3800 BC. The Witch Craig Circular, a 3.5-kilometre route taking about 90 minutes, offers views to Bass Rock in the east and Arran in the west, passing the Scottish Korean War Memorial.

Shopping and Markets

Bathgate boasts a range of independent retailers, including antique store Niche, gift shop Present Time, and kilt supplier The Kilt Studio. The town's weekend market, open every Saturday from 9am to 2pm, sells clothes, homemade crafts, food products, and car boot bargains. Islands wrote: "As early as 1887, the Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bathgate as a 'manufacturing and market town', and today, its weekend market remains a fixture."

Culinary Scene

The town's dining options include El Toro Gaucho, an authentic South American steakhouse, and the multi-award-winning Bayleaf Bathgate Indian Restaurant. Islands concluded: "It's just one of the places in town to shop for unique gifts. Bathgate lacks the fanfare of destinations like the Isle of Skye or St. Andrews, but for those keen to visit the central belt—a place many tourists skip—it's a great spot to discover quaint shops, tasty food, and postcard-worthy countryside."
