Traveller Sam Meaney wanted a traditional British Sunday roast while on a trip to Bangkok, Thailand. He headed to The Old English pub in the Thonglor area to satisfy his craving for a taste of home.
The Pub and Menu
The Old English pub features a traditional aesthetic with dark wood panelling, a cosy indoor area, and an outdoor patio with fans. It is a hub for sports fans, broadcasting live events like the Premier League, UFC, and NBA on multiple HD screens. The menu focuses on comfort food, including their famous Sunday roast, Fish & Chips with mushy peas, and the "Churchill Breakfast". They also serve local favourites such as Pad Thai and Green Curry.
Sam's Experience
Sam admitted he hadn't had a proper roast dinner in six months. In an Instagram reel, he said: "I haven't had a proper roast dinner in six months, so this has got a lot to live up to. If this is bad, I'm going to be fuming." He ordered a pint of Leo beer, noting that Guinness was quite expensive at £8. After reviewing the menu, he chose the Sunday Special deal for 50 Thai Baht more than the standard roast, which included a starter, roast, and dessert. He opted for leek soup, roast beef, and chocolate cake.
Sam admired the pub's atmosphere, saying: "This place has a proper old English pub feel." The establishment was adorned with English and British flags.
Food Review
Sam described the leek soup as "banging". When the main roast arrived, he exclaimed: "Oh my God, look at this. That looks wonderful." He tasted the gravy and called it "good gravy". He enjoyed the medium rare beef and then moved on to the vegetables. He admitted the broccoli was "probably out of a bag" but said he wasn't going to complain. However, he found the carrots "unbelievable" and enjoyed the red cabbage. Initially, he thought the roast potatoes weren't crispy, but after tasting them, he noted a "crisp to them". He also enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding.
Verdict
Sam concluded: "It's not the most expensive roast in Bangkok, you get what you pay for, but it's like a pub roast dinner back home. I'm a happy boy." He described the chocolate cake dessert as "sweet, chocolate-y and hot". His final verdict: "This is not the best roast dinner in the world, but it's comfort, home food, like an English pub at home. If you're looking for that in Bangkok, the Old English Pub is the way to go."
The post garnered over 1,400 likes. One commenter said: "That looked pretty banging to be fair, if you said you was at a pub for Sunday roast in UK I wouldn't have challenged it." Another added: "Looks better than a lot of roasts in the UK." Someone else admired the "banging amount of meat" on the plate. A previous visitor remarked: "I have had a few meals there, all top quality."
