M5 Closed After Serious Crash: One Airlifted to Hospital

A major motorway in Somerset has been closed overnight following a serious multi-vehicle collision that resulted in one person being airlifted to hospital. The M5 remains shut southbound between junction 24 (Bridgwater) and junction 25 (Taunton) as police conduct crash scene investigations.

Incident Details

National Highways confirmed that the motorway was closed in both directions overnight. Northbound lanes reopened at approximately 4am, but the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed until late morning, causing significant disruption for motorists.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene in the early hours of Sunday. One casualty was transported to hospital via helicopter. Police are continuing their investigations at the scene.

Diversion Route

National Highways has advised southbound traffic to follow a diversion route marked by solid diamond symbols on local road signs. The full route is as follows:

  • At J24 Huntworth Interchange, exit the M5 and take the third exit onto Huntworth Lane/A38.
  • At the next roundabout, take the first exit onto Taunton Road/A38.
  • Continue southbound on the A38 toward Taunton.
  • At the A358/A38 interchange, turn left onto the A358 heading toward the M5.
  • At M5 J25 Blackbrook Roundabout, take the fourth exit onto the M5 southbound.
