Australian Tourist Loses $20,000 in Professional Milan Airport Scam
An Australian traveller has issued an urgent warning to fellow tourists after falling victim to a highly coordinated theft operation at Milan Malpensa Airport, resulting in the loss of approximately $20,000 worth of luxury items. Anthony Moss, an experienced international traveller originally from Melbourne, saw his European trip turn into a costly nightmare within moments of collecting his hire car.
The Elaborate Distraction Technique
Moss had just collected his Avis rental vehicle from Milan Airport in December when the sophisticated scam unfolded. While still within the airport precinct, a well-dressed man approached the passenger-side window and pointed toward the front tyre, indicating there was a problem. As Moss, jet-lagged and distracted, exited the still-running vehicle to investigate, a second thief quietly moved into action.
The precision of the operation was remarkable. Within moments, the boot and a rear door were opened, and Moss's luggage disappeared without him noticing. The stranger who had raised the alarm about the tyre vanished just as quickly as he had appeared, leaving Moss bewildered and suddenly aware of the theft.
Stolen Luxury Items and Professional Targeting
The stolen items represented significant value and included a MacBook, iPad, Apple Watch, a high-end Panerai watch, approximately $2,000 in mixed currencies, and several other expensive personal belongings. Moss, who runs HunterMoss, a luxury driving tour company specialising in high-end European experiences, believes the thieves deliberately targeted him after spotting his premium Rimowa suitcase and designer backpack.
The timing, coordination, and execution all pointed to a professional criminal operation rather than a random act of opportunistic crime. Moss later reflected on how the thieves exploited the vulnerability of travellers fresh off long flights, noting that jet lag and travel fatigue made him an easier target.
The Technological Hunt for Stolen Goods
After reporting the theft to Italian police, Moss employed modern technology in his attempt to recover his belongings. Hidden AirTags in his luggage and Apple's Find My tracking system allowed him to follow the trail of his stolen items. The signal showed his belongings moving from Milan by train before stopping near a remote wooded area close to a station.
When Moss investigated the location, he found evidence that other bags had been dumped and burned, though his own luggage was no longer present. Nearly a month later, his MacBook was eventually recovered after he used AirTag details to track its location and shared the information with Italian authorities. The laptop had been remotely locked and wiped using Apple's Find My system, rendering it useless to anyone else.
A Warning to International Travellers
Moss now wants to warn other Australians and international travellers to remain vigilant, even in seemingly secure locations like airports. 'You feel like you're safe because you're in an airport,' he told news.com.au. 'There's cameras, there are police and there is all those things around you, but there are people who target airports so you just have to be so careful of your surroundings and your belongings.'
He acknowledged the particular vulnerability of travellers arriving after long flights, stating: 'I didn't expect to be distracted and targeted. It's hard, you're tired, you're getting off a flight, your brain's a bit foggy because you've got jet lag.' Despite his initial feelings of foolishness, Moss conceded the professionalism of the operation: 'I felt like an idiot, but I realise that it was done so professionally I had to hand it to those guys – a brilliant robbery.'
The Growing Popularity of Tracking Technology
Apple AirTags have become increasingly popular among Australians travelling overseas, particularly in Europe where they benefit from Apple's extensive Find My network that provides effectively unlimited range. Many travellers have shared positive experiences using AirTags in their luggage, with social media discussions highlighting their value in stressful situations.
One traveller commented: 'For the small investment they do add more information to the situation. Losing bags overseas is such a disarming experience.' Another added: 'AirTags [are] a definite!! Peace of mind especially if luggage goes missing - it helps airlines locate them quicker or in our case know when they're lying about its location.'
The incident serves as a stark reminder that even experienced travellers can fall victim to sophisticated criminal operations, and that maintaining awareness of one's surroundings remains crucial, particularly during the vulnerable period immediately after arrival in a foreign country.
