Alonissos Named Quietest Holiday Island, 3 Hours from UK
Alonissos: Quietest Holiday Island 3 Hours from UK

Alonissos, a Greek island in the northern Sporades, has been named the quietest place for a holiday, according to travel experts at Solmar Villas. The island is approximately three hours from the UK and offers a peaceful, crowd-free summer break.

Study Reveals Top Quiet Destinations

Solmar Villas researched data from more than 160 locations to identify the best destinations for a crowd-free holiday. Alonissos topped the list, praised for its laid-back charm and unspoiled beauty. It is the smallest inhabited island in the Sporades archipelago and is home to the largest marine protected area in Europe, providing a safe breeding ground for birds, reptiles, and mammals. Visitors can explore the marine park and spot the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal while diving in crystal-clear waters.

Attractions and Accessibility

The island boasts numerous gorgeous beaches and a historic Old Town perched on a hill 200 metres above sea level. The Old Town features narrow winding alleyways, colourfully painted doors, and charming cafes and tavernas, offering stunning views over the island and the sea. There is no airport on Alonissos; the best way to reach it is by ferry from the neighbouring island of Skiathos, a journey of around two hours to the main town of Patitiri.

Expert Advice for Families

Sharon Bradbury, travel expert at Solmar Villas, said: "Many families don't have the option of travelling outside the school holidays, so choosing the right destination becomes even more important. For families looking to make the most of their summer break, it can be worth looking beyond the usual hotspots. A quieter destination often means a more relaxed experience from the moment you arrive."
