Alonissos Named Quietest Holiday Destination Just 3 Hours from UK
Alonissos: Quietest Holiday Destination 3 Hours from UK

Alonissos, a Greek island in the northern Sporades, has been named the quietest holiday destination just three hours from the UK, according to travel specialists at Solmar Villas. The island offers tranquil beaches, Europe's largest marine protected area, and an authentic Mediterranean experience away from crowded tourist hotspots.

Why Alonissos Tops the List

Solmar Villas analysed data from over 160 destinations to identify the best crowd-free breaks. Alonissos took the top spot due to its relaxed atmosphere, pristine natural beauty, and minimal tourism. It is the smallest inhabited island in the Sporades chain and provides an unhurried holiday experience.

The island hosts Europe's largest marine protected zone, providing a secure breeding habitat for birds, reptiles, and mammals. Visitors can explore the park and potentially spot the elusive Mediterranean Monk Seal while swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Beaches and Old Town Charm

Alonissos boasts an abundance of beautiful beaches for day trips. The Old Town, perched on a hillside 200 metres above sea level, features narrow twisting lanes, brightly painted doorways, and numerous cafés and tavernas. Breathtaking vistas across the island and surrounding waters can be enjoyed from beneath the cool canopy of lush vegetation.

How to Get There

Since Alonissos has no airport, the most practical route is via ferry from the nearby island of Skiathos. The crossing takes approximately two hours to reach the island's principal town, Patitiri. From there, visitors can explore the rest of the island, whether unwinding on the beach, exploring the marine reserve, or immersing themselves in history—all without the crowds found on Mykonos and Santorini.

Expert Insight

Sharon Bradbury, travel expert at Solmar Villas, said: "Many families don't have the option of travelling outside the school holidays, so choosing the right destination becomes even more important. For families looking to make the most of their summer break, it can be worth looking beyond the usual hotspots. A quieter destination often means a more relaxed experience from the moment you arrive."
