A replica of the historic Nao Santa María ship has docked at the Royal Albert Dock. The vessel, which is a replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship, is visiting the city as part of an international historical outreach tour. The ship is a truly remarkable sight to behold and that's before you've stepped on board for a first-person insight into life as an explorer 500 years ago.
Construction and background
The Spanish Nao Santa Maria was constructed by the Nao Victoria Foundation in Punta Umbría (Huelva, Spain), with funding from the Huelva Provincial Council and the Cajasol Foundation. Construction took 14 months, starting in January 2017 and being completed in March 2018.
The Nao Santa María is more than just a ship; it is a floating museum and a proud ambassador of the maritime, cultural and touristic heritage of the Province of Huelva (Spain). It represents the great historical oceanic expeditions that changed the course of world history through the discovery of the Americas.
Visitor tips for the ship
This visit marks a significant stop in its extensive 2026 European tour, which includes stops in dozens of cities where it opens its decks to the public. There are a number of nooks and crannies for guests to explore. Holes in the wall allow for a sneak peek at cabin life on board the ship, with tables and displays set out replicating the historic vessel's past life.
Stairs and ladders across the ship are incredibly steep so caution is advised when moving between different levels. To get below deck, you should walk backwards downstairs and hold on to the rails as a forward movement may result in a sense of vertigo. Be aware of your surroundings when exploring as small items including vases and pots sit on the floor without a guard. There are no-go areas including the bow which is only available to access via a ladder. Anywhere off-limits is signposted as so or roped off.
Opening times and booking
Several laps of the vessel are needed to uncover all of the hidden trinkets and details. The more time spent leisurely wandering the decks the better.
