With schools breaking up for summer in just half a term, families are facing soaring costs and financial pressures. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reports over 26 million airline seats scheduled from the UK to Europe and beyond during the six-week break. However, a recent More in Common poll shows the cost of living is the top issue facing the country, prompting some to reconsider foreign travel.
Despite the challenges, budget-friendly family holidays are still possible by choosing lesser-known destinations. Family travel bloggers have shared six tried-and-tested short-haul spots that offer warm weather, beautiful scenery, and child-friendly activities without the crowds or high costs.
Poland is highlighted as one of the most underrated family destinations. Cities like Kraków offer walkable old towns, parks, and inexpensive restaurants with family-friendly food such as pierogi and pancakes. Flights are short and affordable, and family apartments are spacious and good value. For a beach holiday, Gdansk on the Baltic Coast has the Blue Flag Stogi beach, a 3km stretch of sand that rarely feels crowded. A week in a central apartment sleeping two adults and two children costs from £545 in July.
Northern Portugal is another option, with fantastic weather and stunning beaches at a better price than the Algarve. The historic city of Braga is underrated, and beaches like Praia de Afife are sheltered. Accommodation in Peneda-Gerês National Park can be as low as £147 per night for a three-bedroom property with a pool. Eating out is inexpensive, with children enjoying grilled chouriço and gelato.
The Netherlands offers a budget-friendly last-minute option, just a three-hour road trip from Calais via ferry, which is cheaper than flying. Holiday parks in the Netherlands are plentiful and affordable, making it an ideal choice for families seeking a quick escape.
