200-Year-Old Cottage in Welsh Book Town Delights Visitors

Hay Market House, a 200-year-old former pub in the heart of Hay-on-Wye, has become a standout holiday rental, praised by guests for its stylish interiors, comfort, and central location. Available through Luxury Cottages, the property sleeps up to four guests across two bedrooms and two bathrooms, spread over four floors.

Historic Charm Meets Modern Luxury

Originally operating as a pub for around 200 years, the building is believed to be one of the oldest in Hay-on-Wye. While the exterior dates back to the 1700s, the interior has been restored to blend original character—such as uneven floors, exposed architectural features, and a narrow staircase to the attic suite—with high-spec amenities.

The ground floor features an open-plan living and dining area with a wood-burning stove, and a well-equipped kitchen. Outside, a secluded courtyard garden offers garden furniture and a gas barbecue for outdoor dining. The lower ground floor, once a beer cellar, now serves as a cosy second sitting room under a vaulted brick ceiling.

Accommodation and Guest Feedback

The first-floor master bedroom includes a super-king-size bed, seating area, and en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. The attic suite offers a double bedroom with an adjoining sitting room containing a foldaway single bed. Guests have left glowing reviews: one said, "The cottage was absolutely gorgeous, everything high spec and classy. The bed was like sleeping on a big marshmallow - divine! It was like the Tardis, looked tiny from the outside but plenty of space inside." Another noted, "Wonderful house and a great week. So much space, so much character and what a lovely host."

Location and Nearby Attractions

Hay Market House is within walking distance of Hay-on-Wye's renowned bookshops, independent boutiques, cafés, pubs, restaurants, and weekly market. It is particularly well placed for the Hay Festival, and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy walking, hiking, and canoeing in the Wye Valley. One guest mentioned a minor downside: "Great cottage - across four floors - so much character... ONLY one downside - very close to the clock tower, so not one for light sleepers." Despite this, many praised their stay highly, with one saying, "We had the most glorious weekend... Everything about it was perfect."
