John Murdoch tests the new all-electric Volvo ES90, an executive express with unconventional styling, impressive range, and a wealth of technology. Prices start from £67,560, and some versions can travel up to 426 miles on a single charge.
Pricing and Range
There are three powertrains, two batteries, and two generous trim levels. John sampled the single motor version of the extended range ES90 in top Ultra trim, costing £77,260, or £78,105 with a premium paint finish. That model accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 112mph.
Exterior and Interior
The ES90's bold looks blend elements of a saloon, fastback, and SUV into a large family hatchback. It features signature Thor's Hammer lights, tinted windows, C-shaped tail lights, flush door handles, a panoramic electrochromic sunroof, and striking 21-inch alloys. The tail tapers away with a traditional tailgate, though the rear window is too small in John's opinion, restricting the view.
Inside, the cabin oozes quality with nice leather, powered and heated seats with a massage function, and a heated steering wheel and rear seats. A 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen dominates, controlling the vast onboard technology, alongside a nine-inch driver screen and a head-up display. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 25 speakers is superb. However, the set-up is very touchscreen-dependent and fussy—even adjusting the steering wheel or opening the glovebox becomes an issue. The flush door handles sometimes opened with a flash of the card, but on other occasions required multiple attempts.
Space and Practicality
Four adults travel in real comfort, with five possible for shorter journeys. The boot offers 424 litres, expanding to 1427 litres with the rear seats folded. A 22-litre frunk stores charging cables and smaller items.
Driving and Performance
The ES90 delivers decent performance with good handling and quick acceleration. It cruises nicely at motorway speeds and remains agile in town and on country roads. The steering is nicely weighted, and the suspension smooths rough surfaces. Drive modes include Standard and Off-Road, with steering and suspension settings adjustable via the touchscreen, though not easy to change on the move. Regenerative braking adjustments are also buried in the screen.
Charging and Safety
With fast charging, the ES90 gains a 10-80% boost in just 22 minutes. A full charge on a home charger takes 16-18 hours. Like all Volvos, the ES90 has the latest safety features and driver aids, and is expected to earn a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
Verdict
The ES90 blends comfort, style, and technology, but faces strong competition. Its reliance on touchscreen controls may not suit traditional Volvo drivers, which could hold it back.
