Principality Stadium Boss Eyes Bigger Acts After Record Metallica Show
Stadium Boss Plans Bigger Acts After Record Metallica Gig

Alex Luff, the head of event sales and operations at Principality Stadium, is already planning to surpass Metallica's record-breaking show that drew 76,000 fans in June 2025. The Pencoed native, who has worked at the venue for 21 years, has secured acts like Madonna, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and Oasis, bringing millions to Cardiff.

Future Gigs and Euro 2028 Challenges

Luff, keeping details confidential due to NDAs, said: "We've set the standard with Metallica, we've got to beat that again now going into next summer because that is where we're at, and that was one hell of a night." He noted that the next few years will be busy, with tours adjusting around Euro 2028 matches in Cardiff. "The whole concert season is having to adjust around the fact that 11 of the principal venues are going to be out of action delivering Euro commitments in '28," he explained. "I've got what we call pencil holds already in the diary as far as 2028."

Artist Word-of-Mouth and Cardiff's Appeal

Luff emphasized that artists and promoters talk, and Cardiff's ability to deliver ticket sales and a unique experience is crucial. "76,000 Metallica fans tell you we can sell tickets on a Sunday night," he said. The stadium's roof and privacy were key for Oasis's comeback rehearsals, with Luff noting: "We were fortunate to be the first venue for the return of Oasis. We had them here for a prolonged period of time testing the new stage design."

Memorable Shows and Logistical Feats

Luff recalled Rammstein's 2022 gig, which prompted numerous calls about a perceived fire due to pyrotechnics: "From a show perspective I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it." He also highlighted the massive logistics behind Taylor Swift's 200 lorries of staging and Coldplay's light-up wristbands.

Team Wales and Industry Changes

Luff praised the collaboration with local stakeholders: "We're very lucky here in Cardiff that we've got a really great relationship with our local stakeholders, South Wales Police, Cardiff Council, Welsh Government." On the trend of artists like Harry Styles taking residencies in London, Luff said: "We've just got to make sure that Cardiff is still being talked about and considered." He noted that Ed Sheeran's four-night run in 2018 showed the city can sustain multiple dates.

Personal Sacrifice and National Pride

Luff rarely watches shows or meets artists, maintaining professionalism, and doesn't even tell his wife about bookings. He described Oasis's Cardiff show as "biblical." Reflecting on the stadium's significance, he said: "This one truly feels like the nation's stadium... People are passionate about Principality Stadium... our stewards particularly, they're so passionate and want the stadium to succeed."
