Sony announced on Wednesday that it will cease releasing new video games for the PlayStation console on disc starting January 2028, citing a significant shift in consumer preferences toward digital media. The company stated on its official PlayStation blog that after this date, new games will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store or as digital download codes from retailers.
Impact on Upcoming Titles
The announcement comes ahead of the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which will be available only as a digital download. This exclusive digital release has sparked concern among gamers, particularly regarding the elimination of a secondhand market for the title. Sony clarified that the shift will not affect games released before January 2028, whether already released or to be released in disc format prior to that date.
Consumer Trends Driving Change
Sony began moving toward digital downloads with the 2020 launch of the PlayStation 5, which offered a disc-less version. The company described the transition as a natural response to consumer trends, noting that the preference for digital media has grown substantially. Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis highlighted that in 2013, when the PS4 launched, only 13% of game sales were digital, but by 2025, that figure had risen to nearly 80%.
Gamer Reactions and Concerns
Despite the clear trends, many gamers expressed dissatisfaction. Content creator Conkerax described the move as "a catastrophe" on YouTube. Harding-Rolls noted that PlayStation gamers will likely have concerns about choice, accessing older physical games on new consoles, the ability to collect physical games, and game preservation. He added that the shift will negatively impact specialist game retailers and the secondhand market.
Speculation on Next-Generation Console
The announcement has fueled speculation about the next-generation PlayStation 6 console. Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, a video game market research firm, stated that Sony's announcement "pretty much confirms PS6 will be digital only."
