Six Flags Great Adventure Begins Construction on Record-Breaking Roller Coaster

Construction has officially started on a new ‘record-breaking’ roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey, replacing the legendary Kingda Ka. The amusement park released video footage on Wednesday showing crews unloading sections of the ride’s purple track and using a crane to lift a massive piece.

Park officials have not yet revealed the name or layout of the new attraction, but they previously announced in 2024 that it would be a ‘multi-world-record-breaking launch roller coaster.’ The coaster is expected to open in 2027, according to a social media post from the park that included the hashtag #SFGAD2027.

The new ride replaces Kingda Ka, which opened in 2005 and was the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster, launching riders 45 stories into the air from 0 to 128 mph in seconds. Kingda Ka and the Green Lantern coaster were both demolished in 2025, with Kingda Ka being imploded on February 28, 2025.

In addition to the new coaster, Six Flags Great Adventure is introducing several upgrades for the 2026 season. The Safari Off-Road Adventure will again be included with regular admission, and the park will expand live entertainment, upgrade dining options, and make major track improvements to the El Toro wooden coaster. Gold Passholders and Members will also gain regional access to all parks within their region, replacing the previous single-park restriction.

The investment comes as Six Flags faces financial challenges following its 2024 merger with Cedar Fair. The company reported a $320 million loss in early 2025 and a 9 percent drop in attendance during the second quarter of 2025, though revenue remained down only 2 percent after a modest summer rebound. Despite considering park closures, Six Flags continues to invest in new attractions, including the Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas.

Six Flags Great Adventure is set to open for the 2026 season on March 28.
