The Beckham family's carefully curated public image has been shattered by a public falling out between David and Victoria Beckham and their eldest son, Brooklyn, and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham. In an 821-word Instagram statement, Brooklyn accused his parents of manipulating their image and causing him 'overwhelming anxiety' during his childhood in the public eye.
Brooklyn's allegations include claims that Victoria pulled out of designing Nicola's wedding dress at the last minute and that the couple hijacked the first dance at their wedding. He also alleged that 'countless lies' were placed in the media by his parents to preserve their facade, and stated he does not want to reconcile with his family.
The Beckhams have built a half-billion pound fortune on image management, bringing their publicity in-house in 2019 under David Beckham Ventures. The team is led by Nicola Howson, former head of PR company Freuds and communications director of ITV, who also heads Studio 99, the couple's production company behind their Netflix documentaries.
On the other side, Brooklyn and Nicola have hired crisis PR Matthew Hiltzik, described as an 'attack dog' who once headed corporate PR for Harvey Weinstein's company Miramax. The feud has been marked by tit-for-tat claims and denials in both London and US media, with disputes over invitations to David's 50th birthday party and Instagram unfollowing.
While the fallout is a personal tragedy, it poses a potential PR disaster for the Beckhams, whose status as global celebrities relies on their decades-long focus on shaping and controlling their image. However, given their track record of careful image management, the long-term impact on 'brand Beckham' remains uncertain.
