Mohamed Salah is now a free agent after Liverpool agreed to terminate his contract 12 months early, effective today. The Egyptian attacker has officially left Anfield, ending a stellar nine-year stint on Merseyside during which he scored 257 goals across all competitions and helped Liverpool secure two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.
Salah's Departure and Final Season
Salah's exit was accelerated by a public dispute with former manager Arne Slot, who was replaced at the end of the campaign by Andoni Iraola, formerly of Bournemouth. The 33-year-old's contract was originally set to run until summer 2027, but both parties agreed to tear it up a year early.
Potential Premier League Return?
While a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League is widely regarded as the most likely outcome, no deal has been confirmed. Salah is currently representing Egypt at the World Cup in North America, leaving the door open for a sensational Premier League transfer. Such a move would thrill Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, who previously called on his former club to re-sign Salah.
In 2021, during a protracted contract dispute with Liverpool, Drogba told Al-Axis TV: "If I am selfish, I will tell Salah to leave Liverpool and return to Chelsea. My opinion is that Salah will remain the best, no matter if he continues at Liverpool or if he moves. Any other team would perform better [with him] because he understands what he is doing, is good at scoring and creating goals, and only needs the confidence of the coach. I do not know what his decision would be. This is his decision alone and his future, but wherever he goes, I will be one of his fans."
Salah's Chelsea History
Salah initially joined Chelsea from Swiss outfit Basel in January 2014 for approximately £11 million. However, he featured in just 13 league games before loan moves to Fiorentina and Roma, eventually joining Liverpool in 2017.
