Cardiff City Confirm First Summer Exit as 13 Leave Club

Cardiff City have confirmed their first transfer departure of the summer, with young goalkeeper Luke Armstrong joining Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old will spend the 2026/27 campaign north of the English border as he looks to gain valuable first-team experience after progressing through the Bluebirds' academy.

Armstrong joined Cardiff from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2022, having been with Wolves since the age of seven, and has featured for the club's under-18s and under-21s.

He also enjoyed a loan spell with Penybont last season, making appearances in the Cymru Premier and UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Club Statements on Loan Move

Confirming the move, Cardiff said: "Goalkeeper Luke Armstrong will spend the 2026/27 campaign on loan at Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers. We'd like to wish Luke all the very best during his time with the Rovers."

Raith also welcomed the Wales under-21 international, saying he will provide competition for first-choice goalkeeper Josh Rae. "The Welsh youth international will join the squad for our second pre-season friendly against Edinburgh City, and will look to create strong competition for Josh Rae throughout the coming campaign," the Scottish club said.

Loan Success Stories and Academy Development

Armstrong's move continues Cardiff's recent trend of sending promising youngsters out on loan to accelerate their development, with several academy products enjoying productive spells away from the club last season.

Dakarai Mafico and Troy Perrett both impressed during their time at Yeovil Town, while Luey Giles earned praise for his performances at Eastleigh. Tanatswa Nyakuhwa also showed flashes of his potential during a loan spell at Newport County before his campaign was cut short by an injury suffered while on Wales under-21 duty.

Perhaps the biggest success story was Will Spiers, who excelled across two loan spells at Merthyr Town before earning a permanent move to the National League North this summer following the expiry of his Cardiff contract.

13 Players Officially Become Free Agents

Wednesday also marks the first official day that Cardiff's released players are no longer contracted to the club. The Bluebirds confirmed their retained list in May, with Ryan Wintle among 13 players set to depart after their contracts expired on June 30. Those exits officially came into effect on July 1, meaning the players are now free agents and able to join new clubs.

Former Manchester United youngster Jack Kingdon, striker Michael Reindorf, academy graduate Sam Jones, Josh Beecher, Jacob Hobson, Leeyon Phelan, Oliver Reynolds, Oliver Walsh, Harry Watts, Morgan Wigley and Spiers also officially left the club at the end of their deals.

New Contracts for Academy Prospects

Meanwhile, Cardiff have secured the futures of a number of highly-rated youngsters since announcing their retained list, with Troy Perrett, Noah Williams and several other academy prospects all putting pen to paper on new contracts as Brian Barry-Murphy continues preparations for the new Championship season.
