Qatar Airways Launches Facial Recognition 'Fast Pass' at Doha Airport
Qatar Airways' 'Fast Pass' Uses Face as Boarding Pass

Qatar Airways has introduced a new biometric system called 'Fast Pass' at Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha, allowing passengers to use their face as a boarding pass. The system, developed in partnership with technology company SITA, is described as one of the largest biometric passenger rollouts in the Middle East and globally.

How Fast Pass Works

The system connects 700 'touch points' across the airport, enabling travellers to move through check-in, security, lounges and boarding without repeated document checks. Passengers can register via the Qatar Airways mobile app or at self-service kiosks near Row 3 at the airport. Registration requires a passport and a selfie taken against a plain background. The pass links the passenger's face to their passport and boarding pass, creating a secure digital identity that can be scanned at biometric cameras at bag drop, security gates and boarding gates.

Data Security and Eligibility

Qatar Airways states that for passengers registering via self-service kiosks at HIA, personal and biometric data is used only for that specific trip and is deleted 24 hours after the flight departs. For app registration, data remains securely stored on the user's device and is only shared with the airport when Fast Pass is enabled for a trip. Users can delete stored data at any time through the app settings.

Currently, Fast Pass is only available on eligible Qatar Airways flights. Passengers must be aged 18 or over, hold a valid passport, and have a trip starting in Doha. The airline has confirmed that standard processing will remain available for those who prefer not to use the system. Passengers are still required to bring their passport to the airport in case of technical issues.

Industry Context and Passenger Adoption

Qatar Airways follows Emirates, which launched a biometric check-in system at Dubai International Airport in November 2025. According to the 2025 IATA Global Passenger Survey, 50% of passengers have used biometrics at some point in their airport journey, with 85% of those users reporting high levels of satisfaction. The survey also found that 74% of travellers would be willing to share their biometric information if it meant they could skip showing a passport or boarding pass at checkpoints.

HIA has expressed interest in showcasing the technology to other airlines, potentially expanding its use beyond Qatar Airways.
