UK Homes Urged to Press Wi-Fi Router Button for Free Speed Boost

Broadband Genie has urged UK households to restart their routers to instantly improve sluggish Wi-Fi speeds. The simple trick of turning the device off and on again can clear up connection gremlins and provide a free performance boost.

How to Reboot Your Router Correctly

Experts recommend unplugging the router for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Pressing the off switch is effective, but users should note that it can take up to five minutes for the internet to fully reconnect. Virgin Media also issued similar advice earlier this year.

"It's a cliché for a reason. Restarting your router can fix various issues. Do it the right way by unplugging it for at least 30 seconds," Broadband Genie explained.

Additional Tips for Faster Wi-Fi

Beyond rebooting, router placement is crucial. Keep the router away from direct sunlight, fish tanks, and cupboards, and ensure it is not on the floor. Checking for firmware updates and closing bandwidth-heavy apps can also help.

"If you need to focus on a task, close other apps or switch off devices that are using the network," Broadband Genie added. "Log in to your router; the details will be printed on the casing. From here you can see what devices are connected to your router. If there is anything you don’t recognise, you can remove it. After this, it’s best practice to change your password in case it was an unwanted visitor."

Choose the Right Frequency

Many routers are dual-band, offering both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The 2.4GHz band has a longer range but slower speeds, while 5GHz supports faster speeds over shorter distances. Users can select the preferred frequency when connecting devices or disable one frequency in the router settings.

By following these simple steps, households can potentially enjoy a free speed boost without any additional cost.
