Nicky Butt questions Man United's £50m Santos deal

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has expressed significant doubts about the club's decision to sign Chelsea's Andrey Santos for a fee that could reach £50 million. United have agreed an initial £48 million deal, with £2 million in potential add-ons, for the Brazilian midfielder.

Butt's concerns over fee and experience

Butt, speaking to Paddy Power, questioned the logic of paying such a high sum for a player who started only 13 Premier League games last season for Chelsea, who finished 10th. "If he's brought in at £25-30 million you could understand it," Butt said. "But he's not being signed for £50m to just be sat on the bench, he has to be a starter."

Butt added that he has watched Santos play but saw nothing that stood out. "It's come totally out of the blue," he said. "By virtue of him only starting 13 games for Chelsea last year, who finished 10th, it doesn't scream out a good signing to me. I hope I'm wrong, I hope he turns out to be a great player and blows us away."

Comparison with other midfield transfers

Butt compared the Santos deal to other high-profile midfield moves this summer, including Elliott Anderson's £116 million transfer to Manchester City and Sandro Tonali's £100 million move to Tottenham Hotspur. Mateus Fernandes also joined Spurs for an £85 million fee. Butt noted that those players have proven themselves in the Premier League, whereas Santos has barely played 10 games.

"This lad's barely played 10 games. It's a strange one, it's not one I'm jumping around going, 'What a signing, I'm really happy with it'," Butt said.

Potential versus proven quality

Butt acknowledged that the move could be a stroke of genius by United's recruitment team, but warned that the club cannot afford to let players settle in for a year or two. "We need players in midfield that make us a lot better," he said. "He could come and blow us away and everyone's saying, 'What a signing', but then again he could just end up being another Manuel Ugarte that doesn't perform at the top level."

Santos made 43 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea last season, but his lack of consistent game time has raised questions about his readiness for a starring role at Old Trafford. The transfer comes less than two weeks after Casemiro's contract at United expired, leaving a gap in midfield that United hope Santos will fill.
