Newcastle eye more signings before Liverpool opener

Newcastle United completed their sixth first team signing of the summer with the arrival of Benfica right-back Amar Dedic on Tuesday morning, and they are not done yet in the transfer market.

Further signings planned

The Magpies are hopeful of getting another one over the line before Sunday's Premier League opener against Liverpool, with an experienced midfielder at the top of the wish list.

A new forward player is also still on the agenda, particularly in the number 10 role where Newcastle don't really have a specialist. Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Joe Willock - who is expected to leave the club in the next couple of weeks - have played there during pre-season.

Winger could follow

A new winger could also come in, too, should Jacob Murphy leave the club, with the 31-year-old now in the final 11 months of his contract at St James' Park.

Sporting director Ross Wilson is leading the chase for any further new recruits this summer and while him and his recruitment team will take the lead, he has hinted head coach Matthias Jaissle will have a say in proceedings when reacting to the arrival of Dedic.

Wilson on Dedic

"I'm delighted to welcome Amar to Newcastle United," Wilson said. "He's a player Matthias knows really well and one we all think very highly of - we see him as a player who strengthens our squad straightaway, capable of performing on the right and on the left."

"He's shown his level at Red Bull Salzburg and Benfica as a modern full-back who has the ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch. He's incredibly hungry to prove himself here at Newcastle United and in the Premier League."

Dedic will be able to pick up Jaissle's message quickly given they worked together at RB Salzburg, but those quotes did make recent links in Germany to RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald - who also played under Jaissle in Austria - that little bit more intriguing.
