Newcastle Chairman in US for Transfer Talks After £84.5m Spend

Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al Rumayyan played a prominent role in the FIFA World Cup 2026 closing ceremony in New Jersey, presenting the young player of the tournament award to Spain's Pau Cubarsí. The Saudi official was present as PIF and Aramco, major sponsors of the tournament, highlighted their commitment to football ahead of the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Key Meeting in New York

Beyond the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, Chronicle Live understands that Al Rumayyan held a face-to-face meeting with Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson in New York over the weekend. This was their first in-person discussion since the Matfen Hall summit in April, where Hopkinson and head coach Eddie Howe outlined plans to rebound from a disappointing 12th-place finish in the 2025/26 season.

PIF remains fully committed to the long-term project at Newcastle, but Hopkinson is leading day-to-day operations, with the Saudi backers keen to have a high-powered CEO driving opportunities at boardroom level.

£84.5m Transfer Investment

Newcastle have already made three signings this summer: Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, and Ewen Jaouen, costing a combined £84.5m. However, the club is pushing for more new faces, and that was made clear behind the scenes. Sporting director Ross Wilson is working closely with Hopkinson to secure a fourth signing, with Manchester City's £50m goalkeeper James Trafford high on the priority list, despite complexities in the deal.

After the New York meeting, Hopkinson was due back on Tyneside to ensure Howe has the squad needed to improve on last season's 12th-place finish.

Commercial Expansion

Chronicle Live also understands that Hopkinson's trip included meetings with new sponsors KNOX and Adidas, as well as talks with four prospective new commercial partners. PIF's presence at the World Cup was part of preparations for the 2034 tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Mohamed AlSayyad, Head of Corporate Brand at PIF, said: "PIF continues to expand its global footprint in sport, with football at the heart of this growth. This partnership builds on our existing FIFA relationship from last year’s FIFA Club World Cup – and our work with Concacaf – to deliver a positive and lasting impact. PIF continues to accelerate the growth of football globally by expanding access to the game and creating opportunities that benefit players, fans and the wider football ecosystem."
