Elon Musk's xAI Secures Permit for Gas Turbines in Mississippi Despite Public Outcry
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has won official approval to operate 41 methane gas turbines at its "Colossus 2" data center in northern Mississippi. This decision, made by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) on Tuesday, nearly doubles the number of turbines previously in use at the facility.
Powering AI Supercomputers with Controversial Energy Sources
The turbines are designed to provide electricity for xAI's massive data centers, which house advanced AI supercomputers. These supercomputers, in turn, power Grok, the company's well-known and often controversial AI tool. The approval comes despite significant public opposition, with community members and environmental advocates raising alarms about the potential for hazardous air pollution in Southaven, Mississippi.
Abre' Conner, director of environmental and climate justice for the NAACP, expressed outrage, stating, "MDEQ chose to bulldoze through a decision that silenced the very residents most harmed by it." Since xAI activated Colossus 2 last year with unpermitted turbines, locals have reported issues with noise and air quality.
Community Concerns and Legal Challenges
At a public hearing held by MDEQ in Southaven last month, hundreds of residents packed the venue to voice their worries about xAI's impact. According to NBC reports, no one spoke in favor of granting the permit. Nathan Reed, a Southaven resident, commented, "The scale, the speed, the intensity of this expansion are unlike anything this area has absorbed. This was not a thoughtful, phased development. It was an industrial surge imposed on our residential community."
The NAACP has initiated a lawsuit against xAI over pollution from Colossus 2, accusing MDEQ of rushing the decision and dismissing community input. Conner added, "It's shocking that a state agency and board would refuse to address an unnecessary civic crisis, prioritizing convenience over justice."
Environmental Impact and Regional Pollution Issues
Environmental groups warn that the gas generators emit fine particulate matter containing hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. These pollutants are linked to increased risks of asthma, respiratory illnesses, heart attacks, and certain cancers. The areas surrounding xAI's data centers, including DeSoto and Shelby counties, already face pollution challenges, with the American Lung Association giving both counties an "F" grade for air quality.
Patrick Anderson, a senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center, noted, "Mississippi state regulators appear to be more interested in fast-tracking xAI's personal power plant than conducting a thorough review of its impacts and having meaningful engagement with the families that will be forced to live with this dirty facility." He added that the 41 turbines could make Colossus 2 one of Mississippi's largest fossil fuel power plants and a major polluter in the region.
Expansion of xAI's Data Center Operations
Amid similar community outcry, xAI established its first data center in Memphis in 2024, named "Colossus," which spans roughly the size of 13 football fields. Tennessee regulators granted a permit for 15 gas generators there last July. The company is also constructing a third data center in Southaven, dubbed "Macrohardrr," further expanding its footprint in the region.
Neither MDEQ nor xAI responded immediately to requests for comment on the approval or the ongoing controversy.
