New Japanese-Inspired Café and Bar Opens in Ancoats

Mielle Patisserie, a first-of-its-kind Japanese-inspired café, patisserie and licensed bar, will open in Ancoats this Saturday, July 11, taking over the former Blossom Street Social site at 51 Blossom Street. The venue, owned by Paul Chan and his wife, offers matcha, sake, Japanese-inspired pastries, Asian small plates, and a bar concept.

The unit became available after Blossom Street Social closed last month. That venue opened in 2019 and was run by Hanging Ditch, award-winning wine merchants who had a shop near Manchester Cathedral until 2020.

Menu Highlights: Pastries, Dim Sum, and Cocktails

Signature pastries include a tiramisu tart, coconut and passionfruit dessert in a hand-crafted chocolate shell, berry mousse entremets, and vanilla chiffon cake with strawberry compote. All are made in-house by pastry chef Eva, who combines classical French technique with Asian heritage.

The 'Asian Tapas' menu features handmade dim sum with rose-pink dumplings, steamed to order in bamboo baskets, plus charcoal buns, crabmeat dumplings, butterfly prawn toast, tempura prawns, and meat croquettes. The bar serves 'East-meets-West' cocktails and spritzes, with four draught lines including Guinness Extra Cold and Kirin Ichiban, plus curated wine and sake.

Owner's Vision and Local Roots

Paul Chan told the Manchester Evening News: "I've had a couple of businesses before, including a shop in Romiley and a takeaway doing fusion Chinese food. Now that the kids are grown up, we decided to venture out, and my wife has been developing her pastry skills. We've been operating from home, but the kitchen is running out of space. We've been looking for a unit for a year and a half and then we spoke to Manchester Life and this unit became available."

Chan added: "I've lived all my life in Manchester, I'm a Moston lad, and my kids go to school in the city centre. We're just local, and we like the vibe here, it feels like a good place." The space features a hand-painted hibiscus mural and a soft launch begins Saturday, July 11.
