Man Utd's Midfield Boost: Tchouameni, Mainoo, and £30m Gomes
Man Utd's Midfield Boost with Tchouameni, Mainoo, and Gomes

Manchester United have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, following the departure of key players. Casemiro's confirmed exit, along with a potential Jadon Sancho departure, is expected to free up considerable wage bill space, bringing United closer to securing a deal for the £70million-rated star.

Replacing Casemiro

Finding a replacement for Casemiro in the number six role has become a primary objective for United. Tchouameni, who has featured 44 times this season, operates as an anchor for Madrid and could be the perfect option. Securing the 26-year-old's signature would represent a clear statement of intent from United.

The potential signing could also ease the burden on young Kobbie Mainoo, who has flourished since Michael Carrick assumed control. The 21-year-old was dropped by former manager Ruben Amorim but has since established himself as a vital component of the starting XI after Amorim's sacking. Carrick has advocated for Mainoo to be handed a new long-term deal, viewing him as an essential part of the club's future plans.

Midfield Partnership

A midfield partnership between Mainoo and Tchouameni handling defensive responsibilities would enable club captain Bruno Fernandes to thrive in attacking areas. The United skipper has registered 18 assists and eight goals this season, providing hope for Old Trafford faithful.

United may look to add another face to the midfield, especially if their new manager favours a 4-4-2 formation. Lining up alongside Fernandes and Matheus Cunha in the attacking midfield could be Wolves star Joao Gomes. The club have demonstrated interest in several midfielders and would regard Gomes as a bargain signing.

Bargain Signing

Wolves' relegation to the Championship was confirmed after West Ham secured a draw with Crystal Palace last week. Gomes had previously been linked with a move to United in March, with the club monitoring him ahead of the summer transfer window. Transfermarkt previously valued the midfielder at around £35m, though his potential asking price has since fallen to £30m. This transfer fee could drop further due to Wolves' relegation.

Tchouameni and Gomes represent very different midfield profiles, giving the new manager flexibility in shaping the engine room. However, with the impact Mainoo has made in recent weeks, coupled with his forthcoming new contract, his significance to the team simply cannot be overstated.
