Man Utd Face Greenwood Transfer Blow as Forward Agrees Terms

Mason Greenwood has reportedly agreed personal terms with Turkish club Fenerbahce, delivering a setback to Manchester United's hopes of a significant financial boost from his transfer. The forward, who currently plays for Marseille on a contract until June 2029, had previously expressed a desire to stay in France, but his stint appears to be ending prematurely.

Fenerbahce Agrees Personal Terms with Greenwood

According to French sports daily L'Equipe, Fenerbahce has successfully negotiated a lucrative contract package with Greenwood's representatives. However, the Turkish Super Lig side is unwilling to meet Marseille's €50 million valuation for the 24-year-old. Instead, Fenerbahce is prepared to offer no more than €30 million plus add-ons, which falls well short of the French club's demands.

Manchester United's Sell-On Clause at Risk

This development is unwelcome news for Manchester United, who inserted a 40% sell-on clause when selling Greenwood to Marseille in 2023. The higher the fee Marseille secures, the more United stands to benefit. With Fenerbahce's offer significantly below the asking price, United's potential windfall is reduced. There remains a possibility that AS Roma could enter the race, but the Serie A side must prioritise player sales to balance their accounts before June 30.

Greenwood's Performance at Marseille

Greenwood, who has not played for Manchester United since January 2022, scored 26 goals in 44 appearances for Marseille last season. Despite his impressive goal tally, he faced criticism for some displays. Former France international Christophe Dugarry, a Marseille legend, publicly lambasted Greenwood, calling him a 'disgrace' after a lacklustre performance against Nantes.

Marseille Open to Offers

Marseille are open to selling Greenwood this summer and are seeking a resolution before the end of June. Despite their precarious financial position, the club remains steadfast on the €50 million asking price. United will be watching closely, as any deal directly impacts their finances through the sell-on clause.
