Man Utd interested in Neco Williams who chose Liverpool over them
Man Utd eye Neco Williams, who once chose Liverpool over them

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, who previously chose Liverpool over the Red Devils as a youngster.

Interest from United and Newcastle

According to BBC Sport, both Manchester United and Newcastle United have registered their interest in the Wales international. Williams signed a new long-term contract with Forest in July last year, running until the summer of 2029, but speculation suggests another extension could be on the cards, creating uncertainty about his future.

The 25-year-old joined Forest from Liverpool in 2022 for approximately £17 million and has become a key player for the club. However, with United already strengthening their midfield with Andrey Santos and Ederson, they may now turn their attention to their backline.

Williams' youth career and Liverpool choice

Williams came through the youth ranks at Manchester United before moving to Liverpool in 2007. In an interview with Forest's club website in April last year, he explained why he chose Liverpool over United: "It wasn't until the age of nine that I had to choose a team to sign for. I was still playing for Man United at that time too, training with both teams. All my family are United supporters, so everyone thought I would choose them, but I chose Liverpool. It's hard to remember exactly why, but I think it came down to where I felt most comfortable and at that time it was Liverpool."

Potential summer departure

Despite his importance to Forest, Williams is being linked with a move away this summer. Whether United's interest is serious remains to be seen, but the club is known to be active in the transfer window.
