Manchester United have identified Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Wolverhampton Wanderers' Sam Johnstone as potential signings to bolster their goalkeeping department. The Red Devils are searching for an experienced No.2 to support Senne Lammens, with Andre Onana seemingly out of favour and Altay Bayindir available for transfer.
Radek Vitek's Future Uncertain
Academy graduate Radek Vitek, 22, is set to return to United for pre-season training after a successful loan spell at Bristol City. However, the Czech goalkeeper has made it clear he does not want to play second fiddle. Hull City, newly promoted to the Championship, are reportedly interested in signing him permanently. With two years left on his contract, United accept that a permanent departure could be best for all parties.
According to The Mail, United would only consider sending Vitek out on loan again if he commits to a new deal. His potential exit, which the club would prefer to avoid, could leave 40-year-old Tom Heaton as Lammens' only backup.
Darlow and Johnstone: Experienced Options
United are exploring moves for Darlow, 35, and Johnstone, 33, both of whom have extensive Premier League experience and would count towards the club's homegrown quota. Johnstone is a product of United's academy, although he never made a first-team appearance before leaving in 2018. Darlow, a Wales international, became first choice for Leeds last season and played a key role in their Premier League survival, but he is out of contract next week.
Johnstone played 12 league games for Wolves last season as they were relegated to the Championship. His contract with Wolves expires in 2028.
Johnstone's Previous Comments on Leaving United
In 2021, Johnstone explained his decision to leave United after 15 years and seven loan moves: "Of course leaving United was a tough call, but when you've done your loans, banked the experience and David De Gea is still there at No.1 every time you return, you can't wait around forever. You get the taste for playing every week and when you get to a certain age, you want more than to go training every day hoping your chance will come but wondering if it will materialise. Deep down I knew I wasn't going to play for Manchester United and I had to go down a different route."
Johnstone's career could now come full circle, playing under a manager in Michael Carrick who was starring for United while he was in their academy.
