Manchester United have completed a £50million deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, providing a significant boost to Michael Carrick's squad as the summer transfer window progresses. The move comes amid reports that a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has fallen through.
Deal Finalised After Medical
United agreed a deal to sign Santos from Chelsea last week, with the Brazilian undergoing a medical in Manchester before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract. The transfer was formally completed on Monday, making Santos a Manchester United player.
The 22-year-old was not included in Brazil's squad for this summer's World Cup and is expected to join Carrick's squad for the start of pre-season training.
Santos' Role at Chelsea Last Season
Santos made 43 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions last season, establishing himself as a key figure in the midfield. He will now look to replicate that form at Old Trafford and help United enjoy another successful campaign.
United have been keen to strengthen their midfield options this summer following the departure of Casemiro, who left the club at the end of last month after his contract expired. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup while playing for Uruguay, meaning United will be without at least two midfielders compared to last season.
Ederson Deal in Doubt
There continues to be speculation about whether United will manage to secure a deal for Ederson from Atalanta. The Red Devils had previously reached an agreement over a £38.8million package to sign the Brazil international earlier this summer. However, reports emerged last week claiming that a deal to bring Ederson to United had fallen through.
Santos' arrival provides a timely reinforcement for Carrick's midfield options, with the club now focusing on further additions before the transfer window closes.
