Liverpool could deploy a frightening line-up if new head coach Andoni Iraola gets his wish in the transfer market this summer. With the opening weekend of the 2026/2027 Premier League season against Newcastle United fast approaching, the Reds have been quiet in the transfer window, but Iraola still has a devastatingly effective first XI at his disposal.
Should Liverpool secure two more signings before the September 1 deadline, Iraola could field a starting XI that would be the envy of most clubs, using a 4-2-1-3 formation.
Goalkeeper and Defence
Alisson Becker remains the last line of defence, despite being linked with a move away. The Brazilian, 33, has been with the Reds since August 2018 and is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the club's history, with Giorgi Mamardashvili failing to convince as deputy.
In defence, Virgil van Dijk will be partnered by new loan signing Ronald Araujo, who joined temporarily from Barcelona, while Jeremy Jacquet, bought from Rennes in January for £60m, is recovering from injury. Conor Bradley is sidelined, so Jeremie Frimpong starts at right-back, with Milos Kerkez at left-back following Andy Robertson's departure.
Midfield and Attack
In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai form the central duo, with Florian Wirtz given a free role ahead of them. Alexis Mac Allister, Stefan Bajcetic, Wataru Endo, and Trey Nyoni provide options, but none can displace the current trio.
Up front, Alexander Isak leads the line, with Hugo Ekitike still recovering from a ruptured Achilles. On the left, Bradley Barcola would offer pace and crossing ability if a deal with PSG is struck, while on the right, Ibrahim Mbaye, PSG's 18-year-old winger, would bring unpredictability. Mbaye has 36 senior appearances on the right, with eight goals and 10 assists, and already has two Ligue 1 titles and two European Cups.
