Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding a potential £38m move for Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes, according to Globo Esporte. The 25-year-old, who has 10 caps for Brazil, is valued at approximately £38m and has attracted interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United following Wolves' relegation from the Premier League.
Gomes Deal Gains Momentum
Gomes was previously linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid, but the deal fell through after agent Jorge Mendes pulled the plug. This development could open the door for Liverpool to swoop for the former Flamengo prospect. The Reds have already established contact with Wolves to push the transfer forward, according to the Brazilian outlet. Manchester United are also monitoring the situation, though they are close to signing Chelsea's Andrey Santos and their pursuit of Atalanta's Ederson is reportedly on the verge of collapse due to medical concerns.
Gomes holds considerable appeal for Premier League clubs given his experience in England's top flight. Despite Wolves' recent difficulties, the midfielder maintained an impressive reputation at Molineux. Liverpool's engine room does not appear to be in urgent need of an overhaul, but with Alexis Mac Allister linked to Real Madrid and Curtis Jones weighing up a potential departure, the picture could change rapidly.
Liverpool Stand Firm on Gakpo
Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly 'not opening the doors' to Cody Gakpo leaving Anfield this summer despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds forward has been heavily linked with a move to north London, but the club have no desire to sell, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Romano said: 'Guys, my understanding is the main names to take into consideration for Tottenham for the winger positions are Cody Gakpo, but at the moment Liverpool are yet to open doors to an exit, and Savinho.'
Romano added: 'Savinho is a top target for Tottenham. These two players are considered priorities for Tottenham for the winger position. I'm not saying they are joining, because this depends on negotiations, but Savinho is [target] number one, two and three because Tottenham already wanted one year ago. Then Cody Gakpo is a desire of Tottenham but at the moment Liverpool are not opening the doors to an exit, so we have to be patient.'
Speculation surrounding Gakpo's future intensified following the Netherlands' elimination from the World Cup, though he is expected to join the rest of Andoni Iraola's squad for pre-season preparations.
Iraola's First Summer at Liverpool
Andoni Iraola's maiden summer at the Liverpool helm has been slow to progress, but that appears ready to change as the Reds pursue a return to Premier League title contention. Liverpool have already secured two significant additions: Jeremy Jacquet completed his pre-arranged £60m switch to Merseyside, and the club made an unexpected £34.5m signing of winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna. Further business remains on the agenda, with Iraola keen to put his own stamp on the squad.
