An avid reader who has read 69 books this year says she couldn't have done it without her Kindle Paperwhite, which is now on sale for Amazon Prime Day. Jada Jones, a content commercialisation editor, admits she was initially skeptical about ebooks, worried about the lack of paper smell and feel. However, after building a home library with twelve shelves and over a thousand books, she now finds herself buying ebooks more often than physical copies.
Kindle Paperwhite features and price
The Kindle Paperwhite is slightly larger than the original Kindle and features a screen that mimics paper. It has adjustable warm light, which Jones finds handy at night when the bluish tint hurts her eyes. Weighing 211g, it is easy to hold with one hand, reducing the risk of dropping heavy paperbacks on one's face. The ad-free version usually costs £169.99 but is now £134.99, while the ad-supported version is down from £159.99 to £119.99. Ads appear only on the lock screen, suggesting other books, while the ad-free version shows the cover of the current read.
Savings with Kindle Unlimited
Jones has been using Kindle Unlimited, which costs £9.49 per month and offers access to a large library of ebooks. She recently read Ashley Poston's The Dead Romantics, Jennifer Dugan's Anderson in Bloom, and Clair Delune's Et si c'était toi ? poetry collection. Buying these ebooks individually would have cost £13.60, so the subscription saved her money. Kindle devices are also compatible with Audible via Bluetooth headphones.
Comparison with Kobo and Libby
One downside of the Kindle is its incompatibility with Libby, a free online library service that allows users with a library card to borrow ebooks. Jones has read over 50 books using Libby on her Kobo Clara Colour (£169.99), which is compatible. She also uses a Kobo remote (£24.99) for easy reading. Kobo+ offers a similar subscription service to Kindle Unlimited, but Jones hasn't tried it yet. She notes that the Kindle Paperwhite has significantly longer battery life; she charges her Kobo once every three books, while the Kindle seems to last indefinitely.
Prime Day deal availability
The Prime Day sale on the Kindle Paperwhite runs until June 26, while stock lasts. Amazon Prime membership, which costs £8.99 per month or offers a 30-day free trial, provides access to these deals along with benefits like Deliveroo Plus, Prime Video, and music.
