INEOS have broken their promise to prioritise British talent at Manchester United, with no homegrown outfield signing for the first team since their arrival in December 2023. All additions have involved players from other countries.
Promise unfulfilled
Upon taking over football operations, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS were reported to be “buying British”, focusing on the best homegrown talent. However, subsequent transfer windows have not reflected that approach.
Some signings have been successes, including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Noussair Mazraoui. But there have been plenty of misses in the transfer market for Ratcliffe and his team.
Three homegrown options
Despite the cost, the market offers exciting homegrown players who could elevate United's level. Express Sport has identified three targets.
Myles Lewis-Skelly has reportedly been offered to United and other Premier League clubs. The Arsenal youngster started the Champions League final three months ago, with the Gunners willing to sell after signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. He is versatile and fits the profile INEOS promised.
Alex Scott is perhaps the best homegrown talent on the market, enjoying a stellar season and attracting interest from several clubs. Bournemouth are reportedly asking for £80million, with Liverpool and Chelsea also interested. Midfield was identified as a problem area, and Scott could be the fix.
Adam Wharton is a left-footed tempo setter capable of carrying the ball with ease, an ideal modern midfielder United have lacked. Expected to be an England mainstay, he is another option if available.
