A technology expert has recommended the Google Pixel 9a as an affordable smartphone for Christmas, praising its performance and camera capabilities. The device is currently available on Amazon for £347, a 30% saving from its usual £499 price tag.
Launched in March 2025, the Pixel 9a features a 6.3-inch screen and is powered by the same Tensor G4 chip found in Google's flagship Pixel 9 Pro. It comes with 128GB of storage and is backed by seven years of software updates, already running Android 16. The expert highlighted that the phone will receive updates until 2032, a claim most cheaper rivals cannot make.
The camera is a standout feature, with a dual 48-megapixel main and wide-angle setup. Google's computational photography enhances images day and night, and AI editing tools in Google Photos offer easy photo cleanup. The expert noted that the Pixel camera leads the way in this area compared to competitors.
However, the design was described as 'a little boring' with a flat finish, and charging is limited to 23W, slower than some rivals like the Motorola Edge 60 which offers 68W charging. The Motorola, though, only provides three Android updates versus Google's seven.
For those preferring monthly payments, the Pixel 9a is available on Sky Mobile for £10 a month with no upfront cost, plus data options from £0 to £20. The expert concluded that the phone does not feel cheap in use, offering an experience close to a flagship device.
