Google Home Speaker Launches to Rival Echo and HomePod

Google has launched the Google Home Speaker, a new smart speaker designed to compete with Amazon's Echo lineup and Apple's HomePod range. The device is available now for £99.99 in Porcelain or Hazel colours from Argos, Currys, and the Google Store.

Audio and Performance Upgrades

According to Google, the Home Speaker delivers a massive audio upgrade over the Nest Mini, boasting a 2x larger driver and 2.5x stronger bass. Users with older Google Home or Nest speakers may consider upgrading for improved sound quality. Two Home Speakers paired with the Google TV Streamer can create spatial surround-sound audio for TVs.

Smart Home Integration and Gemini Voice Assistant

The speaker can control smart lights and thermostats via voice commands using the built-in Gemini voice assistant. Google claims Gemini is more conversational than the previous Google Assistant. However, full Gemini Live features require a Google Home Premium subscription at £8 per month. A free six-month trial is available for purchases before September 30, 2026.

Competitors and Pricing

Rival products include the Amazon Echo Dot Max, also priced at £99.99, which requires an Alexa+ subscription for full functionality. Apple's HomePod mini costs £99, offers good audio, and does not require a subscription for Siri, though Siri is considered less useful.
