May presents gardeners with an excellent opportunity to cultivate a vibrant summer display. As the threat of late frosts recedes, numerous vegetables and flowers can be planted to thrive in warmer conditions. Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, shares his top five recommendations for a stunning garden.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are ideal for planting in May once frost has passed. They require full sun, a sheltered spot, and well-drained soil. Plant them deep to encourage a strong root system. Regular watering and support with canes are essential as the crop develops.
Courgettes
Courgettes grow quickly in warmer weather. Plant them in a warm, sunny location with moisture-retentive soil. Water generously at the base and harvest regularly to promote further growth.
Lavender
Lavender adds fragrance and attracts pollinators. The warm soil in May helps it establish well. Choose a full-sun area and avoid overwatering, as lavender prefers dry conditions. Space plants for airflow and lightly trim after flowering to keep them compact.
Dahlias
Dahlias create impressive summer displays in a range of colours. Plant them 10 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot with shoots facing upwards. Protect young plants from slugs using barriers like eggshells or coffee grounds.
Sunflowers
Sunflowers are perfect for beginners. Sow seeds directly outdoors 2 cm deep in a sunny location. Support taller varieties with sturdy stakes as they grow.
Bonnett advises waiting until temperatures are consistently above 10°C before planting tender crops like tomatoes and courgettes. With these choices, your garden will be bursting with colour and produce all summer long.
