While the much-anticipated Apple Car may never materialise, its essence has found a new home in Ferrari's groundbreaking first electric vehicle. The Ferrari Luce, translating to 'light' in Italian, represents a fusion of ultra-high-end sports car engineering with the iconic design philosophy of Sir Jony Ive, the former head of iPhone design at Apple.

Sir Jony Ive, widely regarded as one of the most influential designers of this century, has left an indelible mark on Apple's product lineage, from the Mac to the iPhone. His design legacy is now vividly apparent in the Ferrari Luce's interior, where keen observers can spot his distinctive approach in the switches, steering wheel, and display configurations.
Ive pioneered Apple's renowned 'unibody' design, where devices like MacBooks are crafted from a single piece of aluminium. Echoing this technique, the Ferrari Luce's interior is meticulously carved from precision-milled chunks of anodised aluminium, mirroring the sleek aesthetics of modern Apple products. Furthermore, the control panel and shifter incorporate Gorilla Glass, the same specially hardened material used in iPhones, ensuring durability and a premium feel.
Collaboration with LoveFrom Shapes Every Aspect of the Design
Ferrari has engaged in a comprehensive collaboration with LoveFrom, a creative collective founded by Sir Jony Ive and designer Marc Newson, influencing 'every dimension' of the Luce's design. Although the exterior remains under wraps, initial previews reveal a commitment to functionality and user experience, reminiscent of Apple's core design principles.
The dashboard, housing the speedometer and instrumentation, is ingeniously mounted to the steering wheel, ensuring the driver maintains a clear view at all times. Displays feature ultra-thin OLED technology, delivering bright and crisp graphics that mimic analogue gauges. The shifter, encased in clear, semi-matte glass, resists smudges and fingerprints, drawing parallels to Ive's bold glass-based designs like the G4 Cube and Apple iSub speakers.
Challenging EV Conventions with Minimal Touchscreens and Physical Controls
Despite partnering with Sir Ive, often called the 'father of the touchscreen era', Ferrari aims to subvert the trend of EVs dominated by large touchscreens. The Luce includes only a single iPad-sized touchscreen, mounted on a ball socket for flexible positioning towards the driver or passenger. This screen incorporates a subtle digital clock, nodding to the Apple Watch, and is ergonomically designed with a palm rest to allow intuitive operation without visual distraction.
