Emirates has introduced a new economy class seat featuring a distinctive winged headrest that has gone viral for its premium feel. The headrest unfolds into winged side panels that cradle the passenger’s head, creating a more private and comfortable space.
Fleet-Wide Rollout
The upgraded seats have been installed on 95 Emirates aircraft, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. This represents more than a third of the airline’s fleet, meaning there is a good chance your next flight could feature them.
Passenger Reaction
Dubai-based Lebanese artist Naya Rajji filmed herself using the headrest, and the video has racked up more than six million views. Naya told The National she was travelling from Dubai to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and at first assumed she had entered the premium economy cabin. She said: "After we passed business class, I genuinely thought we were walking into premium economy because the seats looked so much nicer. I even checked my boarding pass and asked my dad: ‘Why are we in premium economy?’ He just laughed and said: ‘No, this is normal economy.’"
In the video, Rajji shows herself lowering the headrest, which resembles a supportive neck pillow, before leaning back against it.
Premium Economy Upgrades
While the influencer was flying in economy class, premium economy has also received significant improvements. Those seats now include full leg and foot rests, along with six-way adjustable headrests.
Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline, said: "The Emirates retrofit programme revolves around the central premise that we will offer our customers a truly elevated experience every time they choose to travel with us. To achieve this, our engineering team has been working continuously and at pace, in close collaboration with an ecosystem of partners and suppliers, to carefully refresh and integrate best-in-class products into every aircraft included in the programme. Our retrofit programme has raised the bar at every stage, in terms of complexity, scale and detailed craftsmanship."
