EE Unveils AI-Powered TV Search to Challenge Freeview and Sky
In a bold move to transform the television viewing landscape, EE has launched a significant update to its TV platform, designed to make finding content easier and more intuitive for millions of UK households. This initiative positions EE as a direct competitor to established services like Freeview and Sky, leveraging advanced technology to address a common frustration: the overwhelming number of channels and streaming options that often lead to decision fatigue.
Smart Search: A Natural Language Revolution
The centrepiece of EE's update is Smart Search, a feature that allows users to describe what they want to watch in natural, conversational terms. Instead of requiring exact titles, viewers can search by mood, theme, plot details, or even memorable quotes. For example, typing or saying phrases like "Marty McFly", "Great Scott", or "sci-fi" will bring up results for the Back to the Future movie. This tool aggregates content from live TV, on-demand services, and streaming apps, presenting all options in a unified interface.
Other potential searches include "a funny detective show" or "a film with the actor from The Inbetweeners", with EE TV delivering relevant suggestions instantly. This approach aims to reduce the time spent browsing and increase actual viewing enjoyment.
Mood Matcher: Personalised Recommendations
Complementing Smart Search is Mood Matcher, an AI-powered tool that helps narrow down choices through a quick questionnaire. Users answer questions about their current mood, preferred genres, and themes, receiving a personalised list of recommendations tailored to their preferences. This feature is particularly useful for families struggling to decide on a Saturday night movie, offering a streamlined alternative to endless scrolling.
While Sky offers similar voice search capabilities, EE claims to be the UK's first pay-TV service to introduce conversational, AI-powered search of this kind. Freeview users, in contrast, do not have access to comparable tools, highlighting EE's competitive edge in the market.
Industry Insights and Future Availability
Luciano Oliveira, Director of Product, Home & TV at EE, emphasised the need for simplicity, stating, "Choosing what to watch shouldn't be hard, but for millions of households it is. Smart Search and Mood Matcher are our answer: describe what you want, answer a few quick questions, and EE TV does the rest."
Technology analyst Paolo Pescatore noted that faster content discovery enhances the overall viewing experience, especially as audiences face an ever-growing array of choices. He added that such innovations could set new standards for user engagement in the television industry.
Smart Search and Mood Matcher are currently available via the EE TV app on compatible televisions, with support for EE TV Pro and EE TV Box Edge devices expected to roll out soon. For more information, users can visit the official EE website.
