Chery's Fourth Brand Lepas to Launch in UK with Leopard-Inspired SUVs
Chery's Lepas Brand to Launch Leopard-Inspired SUVs in UK

Chinese automotive giant Chery International is set to introduce its fourth brand to the United Kingdom market later this year, with the leopard-inspired Lepas marque poised to arrive with a range of new SUV models. This expansion underscores the accelerating pace of Chinese manufacturers establishing significant footholds in the British and wider European automotive sectors.

Another Feline Brand Joins the UK Market

Following the established presence of Jaguar and Puma, the Chinese are now entering the feline-inspired automotive arena with the Lepas brand. The name itself is a creative combination derived from "leopard," "leap," and "passion," reflecting the brand's stated emphasis on performance, progressive design, and emotional appeal for drivers.

Lepas represents the fourth marque from Chery International to target UK consumers, joining the existing Chery, Jaecoo, and Omoda brands. Chery currently sells its Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, and Tiggo 9 models under its own nameplate. The Jaecoo brand offers the Range Rover-inspired Jaecoo 5 and Jaecoo 7, while Omoda markets the Omoda 5, Omoda 7, and Omoda 9. All three of these existing brands are anticipated to launch additional models within the next twelve months, indicating a concerted push for market share.

Design-Led Focus for Modern Urban Buyers

Positioned as a more design-led and imaginative brand within the Chery Group portfolio, Lepas has been specifically developed for the European market. The company states that the brand aims to transform everyday driving into a more engaging experience through a focus on smart technology and thoughtful, elegant design.

According to official statements from Lepas, the new launches will concentrate on attracting "modern urban buyers" and draw inspiration from the leopard, symbolising what the brand calls "the perfect fusion of speed, power and elegance." This strategic positioning aims to differentiate Lepas within a crowded and competitive marketplace.

Model Lineup and UK Rollout Strategy

The initial Lepas model range is expected to include the Lepas 4, Lepas 6, and Lepas 8 SUVs, with the Lepas 8 likely serving as the range-topping vehicle, comparable in size to the Chery Tiggo 9 and Omoda 9. The first model is scheduled for revelation in the coming months, with UK arrivals anticipated in the third quarter of the year.

These new vehicles are expected to utilise much of the technological foundation already present in other Chery Group models, although it remains unconfirmed whether fully-electric Lepas variants will be offered at launch. The initial focus appears to be on hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, aligning with the brand's "new energy" designation.

The UK launch will be a phased process, managed through Chery's expanding dealer network. The company plans to confirm senior leadership appointments, refine its retail network strategy, and solidify brand positioning in the months ahead. Details regarding the UK rollout were initially shared privately with retailers at the group's conference in January.

Rapid Market Penetration and Corporate Backing

This strategic move highlights the remarkable speed at which the Chery Group has established itself within the UK automotive landscape. The group reports achieving a combined market share of 5.3 percent in just eighteen months, claiming this represents the fastest ascent from zero to a five percent market share ever witnessed in the UK.

The expansion is backed by the substantial corporate scale of Chery Holding Group, which entered the Fortune Global 500 for the first time in 2024, ranking 385th with reported revenues of $39.1 billion. This corporate heft provides the nascent Lepas brand with access to established research and development resources, global manufacturing standards, and an extensive international supply chain.

The arrival of Lepas signifies the continuing and intensifying push by Chinese manufacturers to increase their presence in the UK and European markets, particularly within the electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sectors, where innovation and competition are rapidly accelerating.
