Celtic in race to sign World Cup star Ermin Mahmic

Celtic are reportedly in the running to sign Bosnia and Herzegovina attacker Ermin Mahmic, who is said to be negotiating a big transfer abroad. The 21-year-old scored twice at the World Cup before his country were eliminated in the last 32 by co-hosts USA.

Hoops still in the race

The Premiership champions have already spent £30million on four players this summer, including £6m acquisition Camilo Duran, who scored in the 4-0 win over Dundee United on Saturday. That result secured Celtic's place in the quarter finals of the Premier Sports Cup.

Martin O'Neill's side are keen to add more new faces before the transfer window closes in two weeks, with a crucial Champions League playoff first leg against LASK coming up this week. The club have funds available after banking £22million from the sale of Arne Engels to West Ham United over the weekend.

Mahmic's absence explained

Mahmic, who plays for Slovan Liberec, was missing from the side that drew 1-1 with Slavia Prague on Saturday. According to infotbal, his absence was not a coincidence, as the midfielder is in talks over a move. Celtic face competition from several other clubs for his signature.

Slovan Liberec boss Branislav Fodrek was asked about the player's future after Saturday's game and said: "We have an alternative with and without him, but the situation can change at any moment. He is training with the team, but it is hard to say how it will end up."
