Drivers are set to be hit by inflation-busting increases in car parking charges as councils raise fees by as much as double the current rates. The cost of parking in parts of Bradford city centre is set to double from later this month, while Liverpool City Council is raising the cost of on-street parking by up to 20 per cent in some areas.
It comes as cash-strapped local authorities look to boost revenues to help fund services. Last year English councils made £1.2bn in profit from parking fees, according to government figures. Drivers paid £2.34bn to English councils for parking in 2024-25, compared with £2.08bn last year and £1.76bn in 2019-20.
