A mum has urged people to stop throwing away empty spice containers, saying you can make money from them on Vinted instead of putting them in the recycling.
Mum sells herb jars on Vinted
The woman, who posts as @chaostocash, shared a video explaining that even mundane items in your home can earn cash. She said: “You can sell absolutely anything on Vinted.”
In her video caption, she wrote: “If you have the space to save things then you may as well try and earn some money from things you'd usually throw away!”
She explained she “sold a set of 10 herb glass jars, literally what you buy from the shop for your herbs and spices”. She said she only got £2 for them, but if you have more similar containers, you could soon be racking up the cash without doing anything.
Why it's worth trying
She added: “It's just lying around my house, I don't need it, and I've got some money for it,” excited that people would buy things which seem so mundane.
If all you were going to do with them is put them in the recycling bin, it doesn't hurt to put them on Vinted and give them a new lease of life.
Ways to upcycle spice jars
There are also several ways to reuse spice jars at home:
- Travel Spice Kit: Keep smaller amounts of speciality spices, coarse salt, or custom rub blends in your camping gear or lunch bag.
- Toothpick or Match Dispenser: Clean out a jar with a plastic shaker top and store toothpicks or matches inside. Strike matches directly against a piece of sandpaper glued to the bottom or lid.
- Homemade Seasoning & Tea Blends: Mix your own taco seasoning, mini chai spice blends, or loose-leaf tea portions to give as small gifts.
- Hardware & Craft Storage: Fill them with paperclips, pushpins, beads, buttons, safety pins, or small screws.
- Mini Propagation Station: Remove the lid, fill the glass jar with water, and place plant cuttings inside until they grow roots.
- Custom Candle Votives: Fill empty glass jars with melted soy wax and a wick for mini homemade candles or tea-light holders.
- Single-Stem Vases: Paint the outside of the glass with acrylic or chalk paint and use them to display tiny wildflowers or single-stem clippings.
The mum's tip highlights that even small items can be sold online, turning what would be waste into a little extra cash.
