A tragic bus accident in central Bangladesh has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people after the vehicle plunged into a major river while attempting to board a ferry. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Rajbari district, approximately 84 kilometers from the capital city of Dhaka.

According to fire official Dewan Sohel Rana, the bus was carrying nearly 50 passengers at the time of the accident. It was traveling from the southwestern district of Kushtia to Dhaka, as many people were returning to work following the Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Fitr. The bus sank into the Padma river while driving onto a ferry, leading to a devastating outcome.
Rescue Operations and Challenges
Rescue efforts were immediately launched, with some passengers managing to swim to safety after the plunge. However, several individuals became trapped inside the bus. A rescue vessel joined the operation late on Wednesday and successfully lifted the bus from the water. Rescuers worked tirelessly overnight to recover bodies, finding 18 by Thursday morning.
Strong currents and heavy rains significantly disrupted the rescue operations throughout the night, complicating efforts to locate and assist victims. Mr. Rana noted that it remains unclear if any individuals are still missing following the accident.
