Manchester United have identified Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as a potential bargain signing as they prepare to revamp their midfield this summer. The club must find a replacement for Casemiro, who is set to depart Old Trafford at the end of the season after a pivotal role in the team's revival under Michael Carrick.
Casemiro's Departure Confirmed
The 34-year-old Brazil captain has been instrumental in United's push for Champions League qualification, scoring eight league goals from defensive midfield. However, it was confirmed in January that the former Real Madrid star would leave the club when the campaign concludes. United have since been monitoring several midfielders, with fellow Brazilian Gomes among the top targets.
Joao Gomes: A Cut-Price Option
According to the Manchester Evening News, United scouts have been tracking Gomes since March. The 25-year-old has made 31 league appearances this season and earned 10 caps for Brazil. Despite Wolves' relegation to the Championship, confirmed after West Ham's draw with Crystal Palace, Gomes has impressed with his performances. With several years left on his contract, Wolves are expected to sell key assets, making Gomes available for a reduced fee.
Gomes arrived from Flamengo three years ago and has developed into a dynamic midfielder. His potential transfer fee would likely be lower than other targets due to Wolves' drop in division.
Midfield Overhaul at Old Trafford
United aim to sign two midfielders this summer, with Manuel Ugarte expected to leave after a challenging two-year stint. Other options considered include Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, though he is reportedly close to joining Manchester City; Brighton's Carlos Baleba; Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton; Bournemouth's Alex Scott; and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali. However, Gomes stands out as the most affordable option with Premier League experience.
Carrick on Casemiro's Importance
Manager Michael Carrick has emphasized the difficulty of replacing Casemiro. "It's an important position to try and tie everything together," Carrick said in February. "Case has had a big influence within the group on that. So, something we're fully aware of moving forward, for sure."
As United prepare for a crucial summer, including appointing a permanent manager and building on Champions League qualification, securing the right midfield replacement will be vital.
