Kofi Masdammer, a 24-year-old audio-visual engineer from New Cross in London, earns an extra £700 a month by cleansing haunted houses, charging up to £350 per ritual. He has helped homeowners who have reported everything from unexplained noises to seeing ghostly apparitions.
Masdammer taught himself to heal haunted homes before performing his first cleanse on his own home at age 18. He first became interested in the spirit world through studying the history of ancient civilisations in his spare time, discovering the process of cleansing houses to clear out energy left by spirits. He began teaching himself using yoga and meditation.
A Lifelong Connection to the Spirit World
Masdammer said that when he was growing up, his mother recalled seeing things that were not there, and he researched the history of his area, realising it was bombed in World War II, meaning many people left their bodies in a state of shock, which can mean they become trapped.
After performing his first cleansing on his own home, his family no longer experienced any signs of spirits, and the home felt much "lighter," as though harmony was restored.
From Sound Systems to Spirit Cleansing
After finishing university in 2022, Masdammer began using Airtasker, a platform that allows users to outsource everyday tasks, to earn extra cash. He started by using his audio-visual skills to install sound systems and mount TVs, charging around £50 per task and earning around £300 extra per month.
One day, he spotted a request on Airtasker from someone asking for their house to be cleansed and realised he could use his cleansing skills to help people and earn extra money. Since then, he has cleansed many homes.
Cleansing Rituals and Fees
To cleanse houses, Masdammer works with the elements, using fire, water, smoke and sound to purify homes. He uses tools such as incense and harnesses his own energy to purge the homes.
Cleansing a two-bedroom flat can take up to 45 minutes, while a bigger house with three to four bedrooms can take up to two hours. The baseline fee for a cleansing is £50, with bigger jobs costing up to £350. On average, he makes around £700 a month.
Masdammer said his aim is not to make money but to be of benefit to "all sentient beings," noting that many people feel afraid to reach out or feel like they are going crazy. He added that people he has helped have told him it has been "life-changing," and many thought they would have to live alongside the ghostly apparitions forever.
