Aussie Jewellery Designer Vows Police Action After Market Stall Theft

An Australian small business owner has pledged to take further action after two young women were allegedly caught on CCTV stealing from her market stall. Jess Adelman, the founder of Duverah jewellery, was selling her handmade pieces at the Eumundi Markets on Queensland's Sunshine Coast last Wednesday when she noticed the pair behaving suspiciously near her display.

Suspicious Behaviour and Missing Inventory

Ms Adelman claimed that the women, who identified themselves as being from Melbourne, spent approximately twenty minutes at her stall expressing interest in purchasing various items. Despite their apparent enthusiasm, they ultimately departed without making any purchases. Shortly after their departure, Ms Adelman discovered that six rings, with a combined value estimated between $350 and $400, were missing from her inventory.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, she observed what appeared to be a coordinated theft. The footage allegedly showed one woman trying on multiple rings and engaging Ms Adelman in conversation, while her companion, positioned behind her, discreetly slipped several pieces of jewellery into her bag. The individual allegedly stealing the items was seen cautiously glancing around to ensure she was not being watched.

Confrontation and Wider Allegations

Ms Adelman further alleged that the same women stole from other stall holders at the markets that day. According to her account, when confronted by security personnel in the car park, the pair admitted to stealing two rings. "They definitely knew what they were doing though!" Ms Adelman told the Daily Mail, though she expressed reluctance to publicly identify the women for fear of online bullying.

She described similar alleged tactics used against another vendor. "With another candle lady, one was distracting her while the other was stealing," Ms Adelman explained. "They bought one small item but asked for two bags... The security then followed them and saw them distract someone while the other was about to put something in her bag." She believes the pair may have been on a stealing spree, estimating the total value of handmade goods taken that day could amount to thousands of dollars.

Online Warning and Community Response

In response to the incident, Ms Adelman has shared the CCTV footage online as a warning to other small business operators. She stated that since posting the video, she has been inundated with messages from fellow vendors who have ceased selling at markets due to similar experiences with petty theft. "These sellers had become convinced that there was no way to stop petty theft in these environments," she noted, highlighting a broader concern for market traders.

The Duverah founder has confirmed she will formally report the alleged theft to police next week. Founded by Ms Adelman in 2022, Duverah specialises in high-end, handmade jewellery featuring precious and semi-precious stones, sold at affordable prices both online and at local markets.
