A food reviewer known online as 'beccaeatseverything' conducted a taste test of strawberries from three supermarkets to see if price reflects quality. She purchased packs from Aldi, Tesco, and Waitrose, representing cheap, mid-range, and expensive options.
Aldi's Wonky Strawberries Impress
Becca intended to buy Aldi's 'wonky' strawberries priced at 99p, but they were sold out. However, she sampled a berry from a different Aldi pack and was instantly won over, describing it as 'the most perfect strawberry I have ever seen in my life'. She rated them a nine out of ten, saying: 'It's juicy, it's got a sweetness, there's a little bit of tartness, but there's a good flavour.'
She added: 'They are not the sweetest strawberries I've ever had, but they've got a lot of flavour and for the price, I'm impressed.'
Tesco's British Strawberries Disappoint
For the mid-range option, Becca bought Tesco British strawberries for £2.70. Upon tasting, she was let down, declaring them 'tasteless' and 'watery'. She noted: 'They might look really red and plump and juicy, but they do not taste it.' She added that they had a sweet taste like 'sugar water' rather than natural strawberry flavour.
Waitrose Premium Strawberries Tie for Score
The most expensive option was Waitrose's No 1 Speciality strawberries at £4. Becca selected a perfect-looking berry and said: 'Now that is what a strawberry tastes like.' She praised their texture and balance of sweetness and tartness, rating them nine out of ten – matching Aldi's score.
However, she noted that the ratings were based on value relative to taste. At £1.19, the Aldi strawberries were 'absolutely banging' and excellent value, while the Waitrose berries had to jump through more hoops for the same score. She concluded that for those willing to spend more, the Waitrose strawberries were superior overall.
