The move, announced on Tuesday, 14 January 2026, allows residents to order beer, wine, and hard seltzers alongside their everyday essentials for swift home delivery.
A Crowded Market for Quick Alcohol Fulfilment
The expansion places Shipt and Walgreens into a highly competitive Columbus market for rapid alcohol delivery. Uber Eats and DoorDash are reported to currently lead this sector, having established partnerships with numerous local retailers. These include Speedway, Giant Eagle, Grandview Bottle Shop, and Victorian Village Market.
Other major players are also well-entrenched. The convenience-focused service Gopuff operates several micro-fulfilment centres across the city, such as on North High Street and West Mound Street, delivering beer and spirits. Furthermore, the supermarket giant Kroger competes through its Boost membership programme and third-party shopper partnerships.
How the New Service Works
The service enables customers to use the Shipt app to order a range of age-restricted beverages, including beer, wine, hard ciders, and mixers, for same-day delivery from participating Walgreens stores. All orders containing alcohol require verification with a valid government-issued ID upon delivery, and some may also necessitate a signature.
This Columbus launch marks a notable extension of Walgreens' alcohol delivery ambitions. A December 2023 news release from its parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, indicated that alcohol delivery was at that time limited to select stores in only Illinois and Florida.
